Straight Talk: Leadership University class to discuss teen issues
Jackson, TN – Forty high school students involved in the Leadership University class with the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce will participate in discussions about teen issues during a session called, “Are We Our Brothers’ or Sisters’ Keeper.” The program is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, January 18 in the downstairs conference room at the Regional Hospital of Jackson.
Leadership University is an eight-month program for high school juniors in Jackson-Madison County. It is designed to expose young leaders to various elements of leadership and its impact on a strong, dynamic community.
The goal of the group’s session on January 18 is to promote awareness of teen issues that impact youth, their family and the community. The program will include presentations on decisions teens face regularly, including whether to use drugs and alcohol or to engage in early sexual activity.
There will also be presentations on health care, violence prevention, and leadership skills to encourage students to consistently model behavior that will influence their peers to make smart decisions. Since the program will take place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there will also be a lesson on leadership as it relates to the civil rights leader.
