McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport, located three miles west of downtown Jackson, provides regional airline service, aircraft charter, major aircraft repairs and air freight handling. The airport was established by the U.S. Government in 1941 as a military aviation training center and was given to the City of Jackson and Madison County after WWII for civilian use. Over the years additional land has been purchased, now totaling more than 800 acres. All airport property is owned jointly by the City of Jackson and Madison County.
The airport has daily scheduled regional airline service and meets the same FAA safety and security requirements as much larger facilities. It has a 6,000-foot grooved-surface primary runway with a category 1 instrument landing system plus a 3,500-foot secondary runway. The airport control tower is operated from 7:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. daily under the FAA Contract Tower Program using FAA certified controllers. Remote airport advisories are available during times when the tower is closed. Weather information is provided by an Automated Surface Observation System located on the airfield.
Scheduled airline service is provided by Pacific Wings regional carrier, Tennessee Skies, with three daily flights to and from Nashville/Atlanta. Convenient, free parking is located just a short distance from the terminal building.
Hertz rental cars are available at the airport terminal. The FAA requires that the airport meet the same safety and security requirements as much larger facilities. A FAA contract control tower on the airfield operates from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
The Tennessee Army National Guard also has a helicopter unit on the airfield which provides training and maintenance for UH-1 and UH-60 military aircraft.
The Memphis International Airport - an hour and 15 minute drive west - and Nashville International Airport - a two-hour drive east on Interstate 40 - bring Jackson-Madison County closer to the rest of the world.
