NAIA National Women's Basketball Tournament
Women's Basketball: A Winner for Jackson
The city continues to build on its NAIA success
In Jackson, time is measured in seasons, women's basketball seasons that is. Whether its high school or college, women's hoops is big news in Jackson and with good reason. The state's AAA girls high school basketball champions and two of NAIA's perineal powers call the city home. While winning seasons are a given in Jackson today, it hasn't always been that way.
Jackson's first involvement with a major women's basketball event seemed like a long shot to become a major success. But the city and its numerous volunteers gave the NAIA women's championships their best effort - and scored big.
Attendance at the national college tournament rose from 18,575 in 1991 to 28,779 in 1992 and 38,713 in 1993. By 1996, attendance at the tournament had reached 40,000 and, today, the event is the largest NAIA event in the country.
"It's fantastic, to say the least," said Wendy Boone, championships assistant with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. "The city just embraces NAIA and the championships. The goal now is to find a Jackson for all our sports."
Jackson's Oman Arena officially seats nearly 5,000 people, but with teams and volunteers usually holds about 5,500 during NAIA tournament games. About 350 volunteers work each year to coordinate the event.
Several other major women's basketball events have either gotten their start in Jackson or the city played a significant role in their development. Among those events are the Kodak Girls High School All-American game and the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic.
